9/11/2023 – Reflections from New York

On the 22nd anniversary of 9/11, the Institute for Defense and Business (IDB), and the National Center for Urban Operations (NCUO), organized a poignant day in New York City as part of its Dense Urban Studies Program. 

Participants included Active Army personnel, Army Civilians, Army Reserves, and Marines.

The day began with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, where attendees paid their respects to the victims of the tragic events. The somber atmosphere at the memorial served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by first responders and civilians on that fateful day.

Following the memorial visit, the group rode the subway to the FDNY Fire Museum for an event to honor Mr. Ronald Bucca with several folks to include the family and friends of Mr. Bucca.

Ron was a New York City Fire Department Marshal killed during the September 11 attacks during the collapse of the World Trade Center. He was the only fire marshal in the history of the New York City Fire Department to be killed in the line of duty. 

Several guest speakers talked about ongoing efforts since that tragic day in 2001 as well as counterterrorism efforts, security strategies, and the evolving role of military and civilian personnel in a post-9/11 world.

The day also included networking opportunities, allowing participants to share insights and experiences. It was a day of reflection, learning, and unity, as those in attendance honored the memory of 9/11 while actively contributing to the ongoing mission of national security urban warfare.

I was honored and privileged to be a part of it.
